Phytosanitary treatment with Óscar Herrera

At Óscar Herrera Gardens & Landscape Design, we take a thoughtful approach to plant care: diagnosis first, the right product only, and safety always. With over 30 years of experience creating and maintaining gardens and more than 500 satisfied clients, we know that an effective phytosanitary treatment protects without overdoing it: it stops the pest or disease while respecting your garden and the people who enjoy it.

PHYTOSANITARY TREATMENT

When is a treatment necessary?

When we detect an active pest (aphids, scale insects, pine processionary, elm leaf beetle…) or a disease (powdery mildew, anthracnose, rust, sooty mould) and pruning or cultural practices are not enough, we apply a tailored treatment. Our approach is based on Integrated Pest Management (IPM): we combine preventive measures, good irrigation and pruning practices, and selective products (biological or chemical) depending on each case. This allows us to minimise impact while achieving effective control. We always explain the reasoning behind every decision and what you can expect in terms of timing and results.

PHYTOSANITARY TREATMENT

Methods we use

  • Biological and low-impact treatments whenever the situation allows.
  • Targeted spraying in critical areas to minimise dispersion.
  • Endotherapy for trees and palm trees in specific situations: we concentrate the effect where it is needed and reduce drift.
  • Cultural measures: sanitary pruning, aeration, removal of infection sources and affected debris, and improved irrigation and fertilisation practices.

How we work

  1. Visit and diagnosis: we identify the causal agent, assess the intervention threshold, and review the surrounding conditions (exposure, irrigation, ventilation, affected species).
  2. Treatment plan: we choose the application method (biological, endotherapy, targeted spraying), the dosage, and the schedule based on the pest’s life cycle and the specific conditions of the garden.
  3. Safe execution: we use PPE, clearly mark the area, and protect sensitive zones (swimming pool, play areas, vegetable garden).
  4. Cleaning and recommendations: we provide written guidance on re-entry times and when to water after the treatment to avoid reducing its effectiveness.
  5. Follow-up: we monitor the progress and make adjustments if needed. Our goal is not to “apply products”, but to solve the problem and prevent recurrence.

Common pests and diseases we deal with

  • Aphids: shoot deformation, honeydew and sooty mould; targeted control and removal of affected young shoots.
  • Scale insects: progressive weakening of the plant; we combine cleaning, biological control and, when necessary, targeted treatment.
  • Pine processionary moth: a risk to people and pets; we act using a specific calendar and dedicated control methods.
  • Red palm weevil in palm trees: early detection, preventive measures and intervention options.
  • Elm leaf beetle: leaf damage; control applied at the time of maximum effectiveness.
  • Fungal diseases (powdery mildew, anthracnose, rust, sooty mould): treatment combined with cultural corrections to prevent recurrence.

Safety, regulations and the environment

We work with trained staff, PPE, and proper storage and waste management procedures. We strictly follow product labels and safety intervals, and we inform you of any temporary restrictions (use of the treated area, care of the vegetable garden, presence of pets and children). We document what was applied, where, and when, ensuring full traceability. Our commitment is twofold: effectiveness and prudence.

Pricing and what’s included

Pricing depends on the treated area, the pest’s biology, access conditions, the chosen method (biological treatment, endotherapy, spraying), and the number of visits required. To speed things up, we can provide a quick estimate based on photos and measurements, followed by a fixed quote after the on-site visit.

Typically includes:

  • Diagnosis and action plan.
  • Safe application with protection of the surrounding environment.
  • Information on re-entry times and post-treatment watering.
  • Follow-up to verify the results.
  • If there is plant waste, we can remove it or shred it, depending on your preference.
